Making confident product decisions
If ever I feel unsure of a design or product decision I'm making, I try to take a step back and see if I can confidently complete the following sentences:
- The decision I made solves this explicit problem...
- This problem is important because...
- Here are some other ways we could have solved that problem...
- This is why we chose this particular way over others...
If I can't look someone who disagrees with me in the eye and answer these questions, I know that I probably need to go back and try things again. I have found that thinking critically and honestly about a decision or particular problem helps get everyone on the same page, clarifies murky areas, or identifies overlaps and redundancies in your product roadmap and strategy.
