Making confident product decisions

If ever I feel unsure of a design or product decision I'm making, I try to take a step back and see if I can confidently complete the following sentences:

  1. The decision I made solves this explicit problem...
  2. This problem is important because...
  3. Here are some other ways we could have solved that problem...
  4. This is why we chose this particular way over others...

If I can't look someone who disagrees with me in the eye and answer these questions, I know that I probably need to go back and try things again. I have found that thinking critically and honestly about a decision or particular problem helps get everyone on the same page, clarifies murky areas, or identifies overlaps and redundancies in your product roadmap and strategy.
